“Brown’s first solo museum exhibition debuts a multichannel video installation titled Carnelian (2023) and a group of significant new paintings. The one-hour film at the centerpiece of this new body of work, Carnelian, looks with humor and pathos at impending global disaster and the varying psychological effects that an overwhelming amount of digital content, data, and even news media can yield. Taking the form of a musical—with songs co-composed by the artist and Samuel Beebe and script authored by Brown—the work offers a complex take on contemporary conditions marked by polarizing rhetoric and reporting, endless media content, and the looming threat of human extinction.

A solo exhibition of new works in drawing, print, sculpture, performance, and video by Lex Brown. Delivered through poetry, color, and science-fiction, these works further primary concerns with the characterization of commerce and control in contrast to inner transformation and freedom. Bright hues belie complex operations of language in late-capitalism, in which information is often abstract and indiscernible. Nature and technology intertwine in form that evoke the “cartoon logic” of our built environment. In these works organic life, not computer learning, is the superior form of intelligence.
Throughout the exhibition, anachronistic technologies and art historical references are interwoven with Brown’s personal narrative, which was shared in a new essay for the exhibition alongside performance scholar Evan Moritz’s essay on COMMUNICATION.︎watch communication

They Flew to Planet Nova maps a psychogeography of the Northern Virginia suburbs, a region shaped by its technology, national security, and defense companies. Drawing upon Northern Virginia’s McMansion mishmash of Neocolonial architectural styles, columns and edifices are shown in a skewed perspective. Their banality belies the concentration of imperial power at the heart of the Washington, D.C. data center market. Titled after Virginia Hamilton’s The People Could Fly, a collection of 24 black American folktales, these works consider where mythology—social and cultural, institutional and colonial, corporeal and psychological—might be stored and found.

Animal Static

The Kitchen
January - February 2019Animal Static situates existential and meditativedrawings in the context of chaotic video works about a video, food, and beverage supply chain. The large-scale text drawings and seven videos were all activated by custom built and programmed motion sensors. 
The corners of the gallery were rounded out to create a distorted space, suggesting and retail-like space – suggesting seamless back. Viewers could alter the playback pattern of videos by positioning their bodies in relation to the screen; the closer they were to the screen, the more mediated the video would become. 
Projected light on each drawing was also activated motion sensors. In order to view the entire exhibition at once, more than one person would have to be in the room to activate each component, suggesting the full story is not available without multiple points of view.

The Inside Room

Recess Art, brooklyn
Spring 2019For a residency at Recess Art, a production studio with a green screen stage, editing deck, and recording booth was open to the public and operational for 7 weeks. Friends, artists, and passersby were invited to participate in the improvised creation of a TV show titled the Inside Room. The raw, green-screen footage was broadcasted on a website linked with the project. 
For the closing, the culminating episode of the Inside Room was broadcast to a live in-studio audience. In it, two characters’ go on a journey in a self-driving car and become derailed by their AI’s GPS which is set to create directions based on branded media.

Carnelian asks how we reckon with the "Boom" already being here, and how our humanity endures, in spite of itself, through these existential threats?
